An Introduction to the Root Chakra

What is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine and as such is the base that all other chakras build on. In Sanskrit it is called Muladhara, which means “root support.” It relates to energy around support, balance, survival, family, and affluence. The root chakra is associated with the color red, the earth element, and beginnings.

This chakra is responsible for tying our spiritual self to the physical world around us. It helps us move through life safely with a sense of security. Because the root chakra is foundational in nature, blocks in the root chakra may hinder the flow of other chakras. This chakra, as it is named, helps us put down roots that connect us to the physical world. Nurturing these roots is crucial so that we can build on other aspects of the self.

Common Blocks in the Root Chakra

Fear is the trunk from which most blocks in the root chakra stem from. If you’ve heard the term fight-or-flight, this is the chakra that is most affected by it and can keep you in this state of panic for longer. Understanding the situations that can block the root chakra is a crucial step toward creating a base for all energy to flow through.

Common blocks in the root chakra can manifest as follows:

  • Disconnection

  • Worry and anxiety

  • Stagnation

  • Insecurity

  • Restlessness

  • Anger

Recognizing changes in our surroundings and lives that could affect our root chakra is the first step to understanding how to more fully balance it. These changes will most likely stem from our material surroundings such as loss of a job, financial hardships, unresolved family tensions, moving, or dissatisfaction with our bodies.

Remember, change is not always negative even if the initial experience is unexpected or unwanted. With the root chakra in mind, allow yourself to experience these changes and work to solve them. Setting roots and remembering the ties that you have to the positive aspects of the material world, such as family, will allow you to navigate these changes more deftly.

Nurturing the Root Chakra

Because the root chakra is related to the physical, tangible world, connecting yourself to nature and strengthening other physical ties will help you nurture and strengthen the root chakra. There are many ways that you can approach nurturing this chakra. Some suggestions are:

  • Grounding yourself in nature

  • Strengthening familial ties

  • Organizing your spaces

  • Setting and working toward specific goals

  • Finding positivity in your body

As discussed above, the root chakra is all about creating a foundation that you can rely on in all aspects of life. As with most things, it will take time and effort to figure out what techniques work best for you.

Throughout this series, we will provide education and ideas so that you can more fully understand the root chakra and what might work for you to nurture it. Balancing your chakras is a daily practice that can help open future possibilities and clear old energies that no longer serve you.
