An Introduction to the Sacral Chakra

What is the Sacral Chakra?

The sacral chakra is the second chakra, located in the lower abdomen, genitals, and womb. In Sanskrit it is called Svadhisthana, which means “one’s own dwelling”. The sacral chakra takes the principles that are built in the root chakra of a strong sense of self in the physical world, and connects that self with others in intangible ways. It is associated with the element of water as opposed to the element earth in the root chakra. As such, movement and flow is the focus of the sacral chakra and a great way to indicate its health. Other associations with the sacral chakra include the color orange, the moon, and change.

Duality in all parts of life is another important aspect of this chakra. The concept of yin and yang plays an important role here—the principle that opposing forces are in fact complementary and crucial. This chakra seeks to better understand and balance our pleasures and desires, emotions, and is the place from which creativity flows.

Common Blocks in the Sacral Chakra

Because the sacral chakra deals with duality, blocks can stem from either an overstimulated sacral chakra or an under-stimulated one. Generally, these blocks will manifest in opposite ways of each other. Here’s a list of some of the common blocks in the sacral chakra:

Overstimulation:

  • Mood Swings

  • Overreactions to emotions and emotional situations

  • Codependency

  • Addiction

  • Hypersexuality

Under-stimulation:

  • Lack of Creativity

  • Underreactions to emotions and emotional situations

  • Disconnection

  • Low libido

Emotions are the factor from which most blocks in the sacral chakra come from. Finding the root of lingering unwanted emotions and attachments will be crucial to clearing these blocks and finding balance in the sacral chakra. Accepting changes in your life will help you find a balance in your sacral chakra. Remember, the nature of this chakra is flow and movement, like water. Allow yourself to spread out and connect with the people around you, but be cognizant of latching on too harshly.

Nurturing the Sacral Chakra

Because the sacral chakra is all about movement, flow, change, and creativity, water and various creative endeavors will help you as you nurture and work with your sacral chakra. Here are a few general ideas that can help you get started!

  • Go for a swim

  • Take a bath with calming essential oils

  • Jump in the shower if you need a quick pick-me-up

  • Have healthy sexual connections with your partner

  • Create something! Writing, art, baking, jewelry making and gardening are a few suggestions, but the ideas are limitless!

Remember to take your time and see what works best for you. Everyone’s emotions are different and everyone is creative in their own way! Take this time to explore what satisfies you and brings you joy.
